E-commerce turnover in Spain continues the growth trend of previous years, with turnover increasing quarter after quarter. Thus, between April and June of the recently ended 2017, it increased by 23.4% year-on-year to reach 7,338.1 million euros, according to the latest e-commerce data released by the CNMC.

The sectors of activity with the highest revenues were travel agencies and tour operators, with 14.4% of total turnover, air transport, with 11.9%, and clothing, in third place, with 5.4%.

Looking at the number of transactions, more than 118 million transactions were recorded in the second quarter of 2017, an increase of 27.4%. Records, books, newspapers and stationery lead the ranking by sales (6.4%).

In terms of geographic segmentation, e-commerce websites in Spain accounted for 55.8% of revenues in the second quarter of 2017. The remaining 44.2% corresponds to purchases originating in Spain from e-commerce websites abroad.

The net foreign balance (the difference between what is bought from abroad from Spanish websites and what is bought from Spain abroad) shows a deficit of 1,968.5 million euros. By number of transactions, 44.2% of sales are registered on Spanish websites and 55.8% on foreign websites. The turnover of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad amounted to 3,244.7 million euros, 27.3% more than in the second quarter of the previous year. The European Union accounts for 92.4% of purchases from Spain abroad, followed by the United States (2.8%).

The branches of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain to foreign countries are air transport (12.9%), clothing (6.6%) and travel agencies and tour operators (6.4%).

Sales from Spanish websites abroad amounted to a turnover of 1,276.3 million euros, 35.9% more than in the second quarter of the previous year. 70.0% of purchases from abroad come from the European Union.

Likewise, the areas of activity related to the tourism sector (which includes travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car rental and hotels) account for 68.6% of purchases made from abroad on Spanish e-commerce websites.
