E-commerce in Spain exceeded 30 billion euros in 2017, 25.7% more than the previous year [p].

E-commerce turnover in Spain increased by 28.1% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2017 to €8,526 million, according to the latest e-commerce data available on the CNMCData portal.

The sectors of activity with the highest revenues were travel agencies and tour operators, with 11.3% of total turnover; air transport, with 7.5% and clothing, in third place, with 7.1%. [p]

Looking at the number of transactions, more than 154 million transactions were recorded in the fourth quarter of 2017, an increase of 31.5%. Gambling and betting games lead the ranking in terms of sales (6.8%). [p]

In terms of geographic segmentation, e-commerce websites in Spain accounted for 50.2% of revenues in the fourth quarter of 2017. The remaining 49.8% corresponds to purchases originating in Spain from e-commerce websites abroad.

The net foreign balance (the difference between what is bought from abroad from Spanish websites and what is bought from Spain abroad) shows a deficit of 3,073 million euros.

By number of transactions, 40.5% of sales are registered on Spanish websites and 59.4% on foreign websites.

The turnover of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad was 4,247 million euros, 36.8% more than in the fourth quarter of the previous year. 93.1% of Spain’s purchases abroad go to the European Union, followed by the United States (2.3%).

The branches of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain to foreign countries are air transport (8.2%), clothing (8.0%) and television channel subscriptions (6.2%).

Sales from Spanish websites abroad amounted to a turnover of 1,174 million euros, 36.0% more than in the fourth quarter of the previous year. 70.1% of purchases from abroad come from the European Union.

Likewise, the areas of activity related to the tourism sector (which includes travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car hire and hotels) account for 65.0% of purchases made from abroad on Spanish e-commerce websites.

E-commerce revenues within Spain (purchases made in Spain from Spanish websites) increased by 15.5% year-on-year to EUR 3,105 million. The tourism sector accounts for 27.9% of turnover within Spain, followed by artistic, sporting and recreational events (7.6%) and clothing (6.4%).
