E-commerce turnover continues to go from strength to strength in Spain, with figures that, following the trend of previous periods, continue to rise. Thus, ecommerce in Spain has increased its turnover in the first quarter of 2017 by almost 25% year-on-year, reaching 6,756.9 million euros, according to the latest ecommerce data available on the CNMCData portal.

The sectors of activity with the highest revenues were travel agencies and tour operators, with 13.2% of total turnover, air transport, with 11.2%, and clothing, in third place, with 6.2%.

Looking at the number of transactions, more than 115 million transactions were recorded in the first quarter of 2017, an increase of 31.0%. Direct marketing and records, books, newspapers and stationery lead the ranking by sales (6.7% and 6.5% respectively).

In terms of geographic segmentation, e-commerce websites in Spain accounted for 55.4% of revenues in the first quarter of 2017. The remaining 44.6% corresponds to purchases originating in Spain from e-commerce websites abroad.

The net foreign balance (the difference between what is bought from abroad on Spanish websites and what is bought from Spain abroad) shows a deficit of 1,906.4 million euros. By number of transactions, 44.1% of sales are registered on Spanish websites and 55.9% on foreign websites.

The turnover of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad amounted to 3,014.7 million euros, 26.3% more than in the first quarter of the previous year. The European Union accounts for 93.0% of Spain’s purchases abroad, followed by the United States (3.0%).

The branches of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain to foreign countries are air transport (12.6%), clothing (7.2%) and travel agencies and tour operators (5.6%).

Sales from Spanish websites abroad amounted to a turnover of 1,108.4 million euros, 30.4% more than in the first quarter of the previous year. 70.9% of purchases from abroad come from the European Union.

As for companies related to the tourism sector (which includes travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car rental and hotels), these account for 67.1% of purchases made from abroad on Spanish e-commerce websites. Artistic, sporting and recreational events account for 6.3%.

Finally, e-commerce revenues within Spain (purchases made in Spain from Spanish websites) increased by 21.0% year-on-year to EUR 2,633.8 million. The tourism sector accounts for 30.4% of turnover within Spain, followed by artistic, sporting and recreational events (10.1%), household appliances, image and sound (6.4%) and public administration, taxes and social security (5.8%).
